Happy Holidays Vs. Merry Christmas

OK so this one is a kind of rant...
So I have been looking around the shopping centres and been listening to the cashiers, and you know, I would have to say that 70-80% of them are saying and I quote "Happy Holidays".
Now I remember when I was younger, it didn’t matter where you were or who you were, the shop staff would always say "Merry Christmas". What is so wrong with celebrating a Christian holiday called Christmas? Why is it that a lot of areas this time of year are stopping carol-singing and stopping shops from saying merry Christmas? Why people why do we allow this? At the end of the day, the majority of British people are Christian and should be allowed to celebrate their faith without persecution.
But that’s the Christian side, now for the other religions (of which there are too many to number). I understand that the people of the Jewish faith, may not celebrate Christmas as we do, and follow the way of Chanukah, which to be honest I would enjoy a Chanukah celebration as I am always interested in learning and experiencing new cultures.
With people of the Muslim faith, I'm not sure which holidays they follow at this time of year, but I understand that they may feel a bit pushed to the side during the Christmas period, but I still also feel that they should not be persecuted for their faith and that they should not restrict us from celebrating our faith either (if this article has offended anyone I offer my sincere apologies).
But I'm of the opinion that British citizens should be allowed to celebrate their faith and the holidays associated with that faith without being persecuted or restricted!
So this year I am wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! But to those who do not celebrate Christmas I am wishing you happy holidays!

1. I strongly disagree with the statement that the majority of British people are Christian. I'd say the majority are agnostic.
2. What areas have banned carol-singing (any hyperlinks to the Daily Mail are null and void)?
3. I don't think all Muslims try and restrict Christians celebrating Christmas, in fact I'd wager very few do.
4.

i understand what you are trying to say @CeefaxOfLife but its only an observation that i have seen, as for the religious state of the british people, although they may say that they are agnostic and do not follow a specific religion, i feel that if you were to ask their parents they would say that they are Church of England/Wales, Catholic, Methodist or one of the other Religions that are of a Christian fellowship, and as always this is just an opinion, if you have your own that is ok thats your opinion and i respect that you have the right to share your opinion as i have the right to share mine

Well, if the rumours about "being banned to say merry christmas" are true, it will be hard singing "We Wish You A Happy Holidays"... doesnt seem the same.

its not the case of it being banned, its just the case that major companies are telling their employee's that they have to say happy holidays, just incase they offend someone
