Programme: Cherubini - Medea; Beethoven - Violin Concerto, Op.61; Schumann - Symphony No. 1 We are very pleased to welcome back the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to Llandudno in a mixed programme which opens with Cherubini’s dramatic overture to Medea. This will be followed by Beethoven’s epic Violin Concerto. Nobody had ever before written a violin concerto on this scale and it indeed initiated a string of great romantic concertos from other leading European composers. The huge canvas of the first movement is followed by a liltingly beautiful Adagio and then a brilliant, scintillating finale. In the second half the orchestra will perform Schumann’s 1st Symphony, known as the Spring Symphony. This passionate work was completed in four hectic days in January 1841 in Leipzig when Schumann was working at the peak of his powers.
