A new way of getting help with drug and alcohol problems has been launched.

The new free text service - which can be accessed by texting 'DAN' and your question to 81066 - has been developed by the NHS in Wales in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government.

The service will help people who need assistance to manage their own substance misuse problems and for families and friends who want to find out what services are available to help someone they know.

DAN 24/7 has always operated a freephone 0800 number, but some mobile phone networks charge for these calls. Many of the callers to DAN 24/7 only use mobiles and do not have a landline, so were being charged for contacting the helpline.

Now, mobile phone users can take advantage of any free text packages they may have and get the help and support they need.

Janet Roberts, Helpline Manager said, “The DAN 24/7 service is always looking for ways to make it easier for people with substance misuse problems to get help and the launch of the text service really makes that happen.

"If the cost of telephoning the service was an issue, they can now contact us free if their package allows.  Either way, we call people back on mobiles if they want us do so.  We are pleased that the Welsh Assembly Government has financed this new initiative and feel sure it will be a great success.

"With information available on our website, by telephone and now by text the service has developed  into a multi channel access point for the whole of Wales, all with the aim of helping individuals and families whose lives have been effected by drugs or alcohol."

DAN 24/7 (Wales Drug & Alcohol Helpline) provides support and information to anyone concerned about their own drug/alcohol abuse or that of a relative or friend.  The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a week.

Freephone 0800 633 5588 or text DAN to 8106.
