Submitting news - FAQs

How can I submit an article?

First you need to register. Be sure to read the terms and conditions. Once registered, and each time you submit something, you will receive a confirmation email. Our editorial team look at submissions, and if appropriate add them to the site.

*NB Write your article as a Word document and save it as you go along. Paste it in as news when ready. If your system crashes – as happened once at a school session we held – you'll have lost everything if not saved.

What can I submit?

Anything. Creative freedom is our middle name. If you want to write an in-depth feature on Cardiff Bus, go for it. If you want to write a poem about bats, great. We have articles on everything from spaniels to religious censorship. As the site covers Cardiff you may want to submit a story that could be relevant to you and other young people living here.

I'm a budding journo. How do I write a meaty news story?

Remember: who, what, when, where and why (and sometimes how). Something controversial is always good. Do your research and get your facts right. Think about whether you’d read the article yourself. If not, why write it?

Newsworthiness

Whatever it is you choose to write about, think about the impact of your story and why other people be interested in it. Swine flu had impact because it affected a lot of people. Even if only one person was directly affected, many people will feel a strong emotional response to the story.

Features

A feature is selected by our editorial group from longer news items submitted. To get a good chance to have your feature selected remember features explore an issue and are less time-sensitive but no less newsworthy. They can be an effective way to write about complex issues. Features are full of interesting people, ideas, action and energy.

Submitting a video with your article

If you have a video that is relevant or specifically recorded for your news item (interview/sporting event/music/performance) you can include a YouTube URL link to it and it will be displayed next to your article.
