Increase In Steroid Use
Agencies working with young people to address substance misuse issues in Pembrokeshire have become increasingly concerned at anecdotal reports of a significant increase in the use of anabolic steroids.
From discussions held between agencies such as the Specialist Under 18s Drinking & Drugs Service (SUDDS), Dyfed Powys Police, Public Health Wales and Pembrokeshire Youth, there is also a view that the experimentation with steroids may be linked to the increasing use of bodybuilding supplements (such as protein drinks).
In order to find out more information from young people about this under-researched issue, consultations have been undertaken with Years 10 and 11 pupils from four secondary schools in the county.
Facilitated by Pembrokeshire Youth's Information & Participation Team, the exercise included a series of questions about body image, supplement and steroid knowledge and use.
All responses to the exercise were anonymous and provided a useful source of information for local agencies in order that they can develop a range of information and educational responses to this issue.
