The rumours have finally been confirmed. After months of gossip Chris Moyles announced on his breakfast show on Wednesday, 24 February, that BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be in Bangor this year.

The UK’s biggest free ticketed music festival will hold 20,000 people per day across two days on 22 and 23 May 2010 and will have live performances from some of the biggest UK and international acts with Radio 1 Djs hosting.

Chris Moyles broadcast his Breakfast Show live from the Faenol Estate on the day of the announcement and Pixie Lott, who is the first confirmed act to perform at the Big Weekend, was also there to give a live performance.

This year is the 10th anniversary of the Big Weekend and promises to be even better than ever. Live music will be performed across 4 stages and will be broadcast on Radio1 as well as an interactive online presence and many performances to watch on demand.

The BBC promise that the majority of the free tickets will go to the residents of Bangor and the surrounding area. The full line up and ticket details will be announced in the lead up to the event.

The Facebook Group ‘Radio 1's Big Weekend 2010, Bangor North Wales’ attracted thousands of members confirming their attendance within hours of the announcement. As this piece was written nearly 10,000 people had said they would like to attend.

Chris Moyles says: “I love Radio 1's Big Weekend – it's the best event all year. I'm already looking forward to spending a couple of days in Bangor and getting to know the place!”

The Leader of Gwynedd Council, Councillor Dyfed Edwards, says: “We are delighted to welcome Radio 1 and its listeners to Gwynedd and are confident that the Faenol Estate will be a fitting stage for the Big Weekend.”

“Hosting such an event is an exciting opportunity for us to show the wider world what makes Bangor and the surrounding area such a special place.”

Tickets will be given away by ballot. Registration for the ticket ballot will take place on the Radio 1 website nearer the event
