Yn Gymraeg

Hello. I am the Welsh ambassador for the Phillip Lawrence Awards and I'm writing to you to inform you that our awards have just opened for nominations. As part of our roles as ambassadors, it is our job to recruit as many nominations as possible from Wales.

The award scheme was set up in 1997 in remembrance of the head teacher, Phillip Lawrence who was murdered outside his school, whilst trying to protect pupils from being attacked in 1995.

Phillip Lawrence believed that "Every young person is capable of greatness," and this is the ethos for the awards.

The Phillip Lawrence Awards has a network (PLAnet) of young people that help run the awards. These young people are past award winners. The network is made up of The Fellowship, The Lead Fellowship and The Ambassadors of each region. The PLA network of young people runs the award ceremony, judges the nominations and basically drives the awards.

What's in it for the youth group if they win?

- Winning groups will receive an invitation to the glamorous award ceremony.
- National and local recognition for their great work and achievements
- They will be acknowledged as young leaders
- The opportunity to be part of the PLAnet fellowship and take part in a range of exciting activities including training and residentials.

What are the judges looking for?

- Young people are improving their lives and the lives of others.
- Young people are taking a lead and having an impact.
- Projects make a sustainable contribution to their community.
- Projects make strong links between generations
- Projects help promote active citizenship, crime reduction or community safety.
- Projects promote respect and understanding of faiths, culture and communities.

Up to 30 regional finalists will be announced in November and regional awards December – January, with up to ten national winners announced at our awards ceremony early in 2012.

If you know of any youth projects that suit the award's criteria then please nominate them online.

If you need some tips or guidance with filling out the application please leave a comment below and we will try our best to answer your query.

We hope to hear from you soon! Good luck!
