Hacio, S4C’s current affairs programme for young people, says that there is not enough awareness of sexual health amongst young people in Wales.

The programme, which was aired on 15 February 2010, distributed questionnaires to young people aged 16 to 21 in nine schools and universities across Wales. 517 questionnaires were filled.

From this questionnaire it showed that 89% say that they use methods of contraception with most saying that this is to prevent pregnancy, but the figures of teenage pregnancies in Wales is still higher than that in England.

Amongst those that were asked by the programme some college students could not name some sexual diseases and did not know what the symptoms were.

Of those that answered the questionnaire 66% did not know where their nearest sexual health clinic was. 54% said that they did not feel that there was enough sex education.

In England the Government has decided that children as young as five-years-old are to receive sex education in primary school. In Wales this is not compulsory but primary schools are encouraged to do this.

What do you think about sex education in your area?
Do you think that sex education should start in primary schools?

The Hacio programme is available on the website for 35 days after the programme was broadcast. Subtitles are available.
