Unemployment
Unemployment is a big issue all over the country.
The current economic climate is not very good and inflation is still on the rise.
Young people are finding it harder to get jobs because employers are looking for experience and they haven’t got it.
The question is though how can we get experience if employers are not willing to take us on in the first place?
People call young people lazy and say they just don’t want to work. There are young people out there that do want to work though. Going to the job centre for help is not easy.
They say they are there to help but they don’t. A lot of the people that work there don’t even check what you’ve done. I had an appointment with an advisor and they told me there was no help for the career I wanted.
I want to be a youth worker. I told them that the youth service will provide the training for me that’s all I need was them to put me on placement there. They said they couldn’t do this.
The following week I saw a different advisor and they sorted it out for me straight away. It shouldn’t be different when you see different people they should all be doing their job the same.
There are some young people out there that don’t want to work or are not willing to put the effort in to find work. I got asked the other day why I volunteer and work for free. My reply was the more effort and willingness you show when you’re not getting paid the more likely they are to give you a job in the end. I got told I was mad but I don’t think I am.
Employers, the government and young people all need to do more to get us into employment. I think there needs to be more help given to young people looking for jobs and getting the skills to find jobs. I think employers need to start making posts available for young people so we can get the experience we need to get jobs.

I totally agree with everything you have said.
Between university and starting work I 'signed on' to tick myself over, I'm a Children's Nurse, which seemed impossible for some staff to comprehend. I was asked could I do numerous jobs, when I tried to explain I can only work in some areas as it's not a general qualification they seemed bemused, and continued asking if I wanted to apply for jobs in nursing homes.
I also agree with employers requesting/using the excuse that more experience is needed, a very close friend gained her degree and could not get a job in her desired profession because she didn't have enough experience, even after completing numerous work placements at different companies. Her choice was either to move to London and work for free gaining experience or compromise on her career, she chose the latter due to lack of funds for a year without pay.
Young people need to be given opportunities by job/career services and employers and young people need to fight for their own rights to employment!

The Department Of Work & Pensions has responded to this article:
"Under a new scheme young people will be allowed to do work experience for up to eight weeks so they can get a proper stint in a business, gaining valuable experience, getting a decent entry on their CV and providing real value to the employer. Under the old system people were only allowed to do two weeks experience. If they tried to do more they could face a loss of benefits.
For some young people a lack of understanding of the world of work or simply not being given a chance to prove themselves can prevent them from finding a job. We will work with employers to offer 18–24 year old jobseekers the opportunity to overcome these barriers through offering them a Work Experience placement lasting two to eight weeks.
Young people undertaking a Work Experience placement will continue to receive their benefit and continue to look for permanent work. There will also be an opportunity for some participants to have their placement extended by up to 4 weeks, where an employer makes an offer to take them onto an Apprenticeship."

Will this apply to all young people or will you have to wait six months to meet certain criteria to do this? The reason behind the question is when i was signing on only certain things were avilable to you untill you had been sigining on for a long time.
