Llangatwg Community School has risen over £1000 for the Northern Cleft Foundation by doing weird and wonderful things!

The Northern Cleft Foundation is a voluntary organisation that travels to India to operate on children and adults, to correct cleft lip and palate deformities for free.

After an assembly about the organisation, the whole school, pupils and staff were overwhelmed by the problems these young children and adults were dealing with and were also overwhelmed by the great work that the Northern Cleft Foundation has been doing to help these people.

Everyone in the school really wanted to support this organisation and good work and felt very passionate about it.

I'm sure many schools have the problem of a decrease in attendance on non-school uniform days as parents are under the impression that they are 'pointless' or they are non-working days.

With this problem, the senior prefects, school council and other pupils put their heads together to figure out a way how to raise money without seeing a decrease in attendance.

A senior prefect, a goby one, Abi decided she wanted to do a sponsored silence. Most people doubted her as if anyone knows her; they would agree that it seemed impossible for her to achieve this! She was successful and raised over £250!

It didn't stop there! April 1st, April fools day, Mr. Skilton, our head teacher wanted to do his bit for charity and volunteered himself, to have his head shaved! Most pupils found it hysterical that our head teacher was willing to walk round bald, especially in the cold weather... brrrrrrr! Lots of pupils and teachers sponsored him. At break, everyone gathered in the hall to watch the hair removal spectacular! There was a debate, should he go for a Mohawk? Number 2? Or off with it all?! Mr. Skilton is now bald. This raised over £400!

Continuing with the subject of hair... Mr. Williams, our deputy head teacher decided he would sacrifice his leg hair and get his legs waxed! The highest bidder got the chance to put him through pain. The thought of that encouraged a lot of pupils for whatever reasons. The highest bid was over £60, donated by pupils from the Child Development class and teacher for a pupil that really wanted to wax his leg! There was a big turn out to see Mr. Williams get his legs waxed. This raised over £400!

I assisted a year seven class in washing teacher's cars. Not the best idea I have had since I was soaked, head to toe! They charged £2.50 a car and at the end of the day the car park looked like a gigantic solar panel with all the cars gleaming! They all thoroughly enjoyed and I'm sure the teachers are happy with the good service!

On the last day of term, a year nine class decided it would be a fun idea to put some teachers in the stocks and throw sponges at them! Charging 20p per sponge, as you can imagine, the queue was massive! It was a very successful event and left teachers dripping wet.

The grand total has yet to be announced but with these current figures, we have raised well over £1000 pound for the Northern Cleft Foundation.

Llangatwg Community School is a very charitable school and lives up to its name as a 'community' school; you really get the feel of a community in Llangatwg. I'm leaving this year and don't want to go!

Well done to everyone who organised and participated, the school wouldn't have been able to raise this amount of money without you! Also a massive thank you and a big well done to the pupils for donating money to the organisation.
