The Avengers are a team of superheroes that are otherwise known as "Earth's Mightiest Heroes".

DC comics have a very similar set up in The Justice League, but with Marvel being so popular recently (Spiderman, Thor, Iron Man) it was only natural that they'd build up to their biggest film yet, which ties all their major franchises together!

Now, I myself am a big comic geek and know loads about these guys and girls but I'm aware that some of you might not know as much, if anything, about some of these characters that'll be showing up in the new Avengers movie in 2012.  I've written a little bit about each of the main ones you'll be seeing in the film below and emailed the Editor to get a new vote up on the site.

Let's begin:

  • Iron Man - otherwise known as Tony Stark, the super smart, multi-billionaire with a heart condition.  Tony Stark comes from a long line of genius inventors and put his skills to good use building his super heroic suit of armour complete with guns, lasers, missiles, jet boots and loads of ability enhancers.  Tony Stark puts up most of the capital to provide the Avengers with all their gadgets. vehicles and headquarters.

  • Thor - a native to a whole different realm called Asgard, which is basically a fairly magical place with lots of Norse/Viking mythology.  Thor came to Earth originally after being exiled from his home for 'hotheadedness', after being on Earth for a while though he fell in love with the place and it's people and decided to make it his home.  Thor owns a hugely powerful hammer called 'Mjolnir', which gives him the abilities of: flight, super strength, high speed, and energy manipulation (thus his nick name 'The Thunder God').

  • Captain America - a.k.a. Steve Rogers was a scrawny boy from the 1940's that really wanted to go to war.  Sadly, he was too small and was constantly rejected from enrolling in the armed forces to fight for America.  His courage and excellent mental qualities were noted by a scientist however and he was asked if he'd like to take part in a 'super soldier' experiment.  Steve Rogers agreed and Captain America was born.  He is considered to be the perfect human specimen and therefore is at peak strength, agility, speed, thought and health at all times.  Captain America is perhaps most famous for his shield bearing the stars and stripes, which he uses to great effect offensively and defensively.

  • The Incredible Hulk - the big, green, highly destructive machine (and more importantly, my personal favourite)!  Dr. Bruce Banner, considered one of Earth's most brilliant minds, was caught in an experiment involving gamma radiation.  Since that time he has discovered that whenever he gets angry he, rather inconveniently, transforms into a ten foot tall, wide as a bus, green humanoid called 'The Incredible Hulk'.  The Hulk has no real limits to his strength, durability, or toughness and is noted to 'get stronger, the more angry he gets', which, for a big guy with no limits to his anger, means he gets pretty damn strong.  Banner and Hulk are constantly battling for consciousness and Hulk can sometimes be dominated by his muscle rather than his mind.

  • Black Widow - Natalia "Natasha" Alianovna Romanova is a world class athlete and gymnast with extensive training in various martial arts and espionage.  She works for S.H.I.E.L.D., the shadow-like government agency who originally suggested bringing the Avengers together, and therefore has access to highly sensitive information and practically futuristic weaponry and equipment.  Black Widow has been enhanced by biotechnology which also means she ages slowly and heals damage at a rate faster than average humans.

  • Hawkeye - a member of the Avengers that has no super powers whatsoever named Clint Barton.  Hawkeye is at the peak of human conditioning and is an excellent athlete, martial artist, fencer and, most importantly, an exceptional marksman.  Hawkeye is extremely proficient with a bow and arrow and always carries a quiver of 'trick arrows' with him, which he uses offensively and defensively in fights.  Some of the trick arrows Hawkeye has been known to use are: acid arrows, boomerang arrows, Pym Particle arrows, rocket arrows, sonic arrows and even boxing glove arrows!

  • Nick Fury - the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and probably one of the toughest men without super powers on the planet!  Nick Fury is highly athletic, a master tactician, weapons expert and skilled in various martial art styles.  Being the Director of S.H.I.EL.D. means that Nick has access to huge amounts of high tech, futuristic and even alien technology and has knowledge of top secret information unknown to practically everyone else on Earth.  Nick is famous four wearing a cosmetic eye patch over one eye, which has approximately 95% vision loss.

It's worth mentioning that this is NOT the original Avengers line up!  If the movie were staying true to it's comic book origins they would have Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and two other classic characters:

  • Ant Man - a scientist known as Dr. Hank Pym who discovers 'Pym Particles' that give people and nearby objects the power to change mass at will: shrinking to molecularly small levels or growing to the size of skyscrapers.  He wears a cybernetic helmet to communicate with ants and uses insectoid-type wings to fly and blaster gloves called 'stingers'.

  • Wasp - or Janet van Dyne is the super-heroine of the team and is linked to Ant Man in the sense that she uses 'Pym Particles' as well.  Wasp is able to shrink to roughly seven centimeters tall and grow to larger than average sizes.  She is also able to fly, shoot electric blasts from her fists and also communicate with insects.  Wasp is perhaps one of the most noticeable members as she wears a striking yellow and black, wasp like, costume.

So there you have it - Avengers 101.  I personally cannot wait for the film and I hope after this little write up, you can't either :D
