Meeting a famous person is great.

The feeling you get when you can actually see the person you aspire to be like is fantastic and unbelievable.

But, meeting an important person is so much different. When meeting an important person you get nervous and you hope that you don’t say the wrong thing, but do say the right thing at the right time.

On Tuesday 22 June, the Wicid.tv editorial team got the chance to meet with the Children’s Commissioner For Wales.

Who?

Well, his name is Keith Towler and he is our Commissioner, and an important person for us to know about.

We met at Pontypridd Library and discussed various matters of interest to us, and how we can work together to make sure that we know about our rights and what we can do to make a difference.

From the meeting it was clear that we agreed on many matters, and that there are a lot of opportunities for young people out there, but they are not advertised well. Also, not many children and young people know about Keith, or indeed about their rights.

As a team we started by asking Mr Towler about our website and shamefully he hadn’t visited it. But he is a very busy man so this was understandable.

But that didn’t stop us asking him more questions. We challenged the Commissioner about his views on raising the age from 18 to 21 in relation to alcohol consumption, and what he thought about the idea of giving children at the age of five sex education.

On the first point, he said that he was not in favor of raising the age to 21. He said: “Banning alcoholic beverages hardly ever works, but what we do clearly need to do is put more effort into education in relation to alcohol and its affects.”

As for sex education for five-year-olds, he said that childhood should be protected for as long as possible and that in sex education there needs to be more of a focus on relationships.

As a team we found ourselves agreeing with many of the Children's Commissioner's views, and we were very impressed by him.

So, as we got to know about the Commissioner, so should you!

Visit his website, www.childcom.org.uk, to explore your rights and find more about Keith, who is very cool.

Mr Towler was equaly as impressed by you as a team of editors as well.
The quality of questions were exceptional and the whole experience for him was frank and enjoyable. Well done RCT you have made quite an impression on the Childrens Commissioner for Wales and shown that young people's points of view are not to be ignored.

Speaking of famous people, isn't that Catrin from the (seriously kickass) rock band SAL on the right?
