What’s happening today?

Town used to be busy.

Even when I was young, you couldn't move for the amount of people.

I know from when I was younger, and from what I have heard from family members, that Wrexham used to be a market town.

The indoor markets used to thrive, but people do not seem to use them anymore, and a lot of the businesses are closing.

Today, half of the shops have closed down or are going into administration, making Wrexham look like a ghost town.

People are blaming the rise in Internet shopping for shop closures, and yes that may be true - usually January is a very busy time in the town centre because of the sales - but a lot of people buy online because it is less hassle. They don’t have to worry about parking, carrying shopping bags around etc, because everything is delivered direct to the door.

Personally, I think if Wrexham had stayed as it was, more people would have wanted to shop in the town as I think people used to like the idea of meeting friends and family and stopping for a chat in the town centre.

This in turn benefited the local businesses. I think a lot of people preferred the quaint, little shops where a lot of the shopkeepers got to know each individual customer, whereas today it seems to be more impersonal. Most of the shops have moved out of the town centre and into the outskirts of the town.

I think people find it tiring to walk from one end of town to the other. A bus has been put in place for people to travel from one end of town to the other, but this is not proving successful. I think the reason for this is that people do not want to travel on a bus to do their shopping.

The question is, if this keeps up, what’s it going to be like in the future? The way it’s going I think that the town is going to disappear altogether if someone doesn't do something quick, which is sad because Wrexham‘s history will also disappear.

It is always sad to hear when a part of a town's history is threatened. I remember going to Wrexham with my grandmother when i was really younger and enjoying it.

Unfortunately this seems to be the way its going now. Just like how DVDs killed the video tape, internet shopping is killing traditional markets and stores who can't keep up with the range of what they sell or the added benefit of being able to shop from home. =/
